DJ Coollen in Penang

under Travel

Malaysia’s incredible array of cultures are the result of a long and complicated history of political and social relations, and it’s a history that’s still unfolding today.  It’s an amazing place to visit, offering plenty of opportunities for exploring the history of the civilizations here, and it’s also an amazing place to enjoy moments of exquisite calm.  It’s a fantastic place to find something new and delicious to eat, and it has an incredible variety of luxury hotels.  Penang offers many choices for the perfect getaway, with places that offer glorious solitude, as well as a vibrant urban scene with plenty of choices for diversions and excitements.

The local culture is extremely diverse, with a wide range of languages and traditions.  Islam is the majority religion, and there is also a substantial part of the population practicing various traditions of Buddhism, along with Christian and Jewish populations.  A number of the Chinese-descended peoples practice a form of ancestor worship, that dates back to the beginnings of knowable history.  It’s a heady feeling to spend time here, in a place where there are very old traditions, along with a sensibility that embraces the new with open arms.  There is a rich tradition of music in Malaysia, and you can find all sorts of classical players, trained in folk traditions as well as the university trained Asian and European classical world music.

You can also go to a club and hear someone like DJ Coollen, who plays an eclectic array of electronic beats all over Malaysia.  There’s a very big electronic and techno music scene here.  Like hop hop was, and still is, twenty years ago, electronic music artists are popping up wherever there’s a strong urban youth culture.  The roots are in hip hop, of course, with some varying strands that go into different realms, but that seems to be the heart of hip hop anyway, with a strong tendency toward evolution or revolution.  If he’s not busy skating, or winning yo-yo competitions, DJ Coollen can help you learn what’s sounding hot in Penang these days.
