KL Folk: Mei Chern

under Travel

There are amazing pleasures awaiting you in Kuala Lumpur.  It’s one of the most exciting cities in the world, and certainly stands as the hub of culture and finance in Malaysia.  This means that the urban landscape is fun and filled with adventure.  If your pleasure is visual art and culture, there is plenty here to keep you dazzled and amused.  If night life speaks to your heart, you can find that here as well.  There is a fantastic mix of cultures here that perform themselves in fascinating and captivating ways, in the food, in the art, and in the accommodation.  In Kuala Lumpur, hotels are plentiful, and the best of these elevate hospitality to an art form.

There are histories and peoples here that converge and make new cultures in radical and interesting ways.  Even though the heartbeat of the city tends toward exotic and splendid relaxation, there is also a tremendous energy that speaks to the creativity of the people who are drawn here.  There are all kinds of art forms practiced here, and some very lovely innovations in music.  The electronic scene as well as the classical Malaysian music scene are very active, and there are also folk singers.  Mei Chern is one of these, and is a force to reckon with.

Her lovely melodies and gorgeous vocals make her easy to listen to.  This singer songwriter has trained as an experimental psychologist, and has worked as a local columnist.  This background suggests a depth and intensity to her work, and it comes through the music, in between the notes, in a very tender and poignant way.  To listen to Mei Chern is to rediscover the power of indie folk music, and the lyrics are spectacularly personal and evocative, dealing with social justice and heartbreak and all the tones in between.
