One of the best Christmas seasons of my life, was the year I went to Manhattan. The New York cheap hotel we booked, was very inexpensively priced, but very luxurious. It was a year that the city was trying very hard to get tourists to come back. We stayed down in the city close to 5th Avenue, which is one of the most festive areas during the holidays. Snow covered the ground, but it was just not that cold out. White lights decorated most of the trees, and we skated for an entire day on the ice rink by Rockefeller Plaza.
A new tradition was started in New York this year, and that is the lighting of the UNICEF Snowflake. The giant snowflake is located on 5th Avenue, of course, and will be lit each Friday through January 16, 2010. Each night they will serve cookies and hot chocolate while live music fills the square. Each day of the week, Santa Claus will make his traditional appearance at the Macy’s department store. Just the walk to Macy’s is filled with Christmas delights, as the store windows are decorated in the most glamorous and innovative ways.
This is a visual treat provided by the talented window dressers of Bergdorf’s, Barney’s, and Bloomingdale’s just to name a few. And the holiday spirit does not end there. Throughout the month the New York City Ballet performs the Nutcracker at the Lincoln Center, with many tickets priced at just ten dollars, making it possible for just about everyone to enjoy in this traditional Christmas ballet. To walk through the city at this time, will leave you filled with holiday spirit and while any time of the year is a great time to be in New York City, to be there for Christmas truly is a magical experience. I have only been there once, but even now when I think back, my memories light up my mind.
