When Christopher Columbus famously set sail in 1492 he had no idea that he would be discovering the New World or that a city in the future state of Ohio would be named after him. However, guests who visit the city and stay in one of the Columbus luxury hotels are more than aware of this famous historical figure and his importance to this country. If only those luxury hotels and resorts were around when he first arrived here his stay would have been much more comfortable. But then Columbus never made it to Ohio, though you can.
Columbus, the man not the city, was born in Italy in 1451. The exact date and location are not known though it is commonly accepted that he was born sometime between August and October and was likely born in Genoa. At this time the world was a very different place, not only due to the differences in lifestyles and technological advances but also in belief systems and accepted realities. During the time of Columbus’ famous voyage much of the world’s population of scholars believed in the scientist Ptolemy’s assessment of the terrestrial landmass for the world. Columbus, however, believe it was much smaller.
It was in large part due to his errors of map reading and geographic calculations that landed Columbus in the New World. He had presented a plan to sail to John II, who was the King of Portugal in 1485 and seven years later the Santa Maria, La Nina and La Pinta set sail for a trip from the Canary Islands that was to last five weeks. However, one of the major errors that immediately affected the trip was Columbus’ reading of the map in Italian miles. They are shorter than Arabic miles, which is what Alfraganus used when creating the map. There were many other factors involved in the delayed and off routed trip that would become legendary in the history of one of the world’s most powerful nations.
