Jackson Hole or Jackson

under Travel

Actually this area in Wyoming is called both. The major town in called Jackson and the sixty mile long valley is called Jackson Hole. People come from all over the world to stay at one of the many hotels Jackson has to offer and enjoy the Jackson Hole Valley. Hundreds of years the area was filled with many different Native American tribes. It was home to Gros Ventre tribe, Bannock tribe, Blackfeet, Crow and the Shoshoni tribes. They lived there among the beautiful Teton Mountain range with is majestic snow caped peaks for a long time. They lived of the land, lakes, rivers and animals that are abundant in the state of Wyoming.

It was the winter of 1807 and 08 that would change the region forever. This is when John Colter made way into the valley as the Lewis and Clark expedition was making its return. It was a trappers paradise so they stayed a while. A few of the famous trappers and mountain men to spend time in this are include Jedediah Smith, Sublette and Bridger. The town was named after David Jackson and the first photos of the Teton mountains and Yellowstone Park were taken by William Henry Jackson. The photos and also sketches that were drawn by Tom Moran were the main convincing argument for Congress to protect this impressive wilderness and lead to the first declared national park, Yellowstone National Park in 1872. The Grand Teton National Park was not official until 1920 by the help of John D Rockefeller who bought and then donated thousands of acres. It is a fascinating place with a wonderful history and of course breathtaking beauty that everyone should see. Wither one visits in the summer or winter there is plenty of great outdoor adventures to take part in.
