California has always been ahead of the crowd. Rarely do they decide to wait for National Standards to tell them how to handle situations. This can be seen by their attitude toward the death penalty, smoking in public, and now the green movement . There is currently a proposed decision to upgrade the gas and electric grids now in an effort to provide better energy to people more efficiently, with less hassle, and better security. This is something that President Obama has spoken on before in terms of the fact that gas and electric grids across the nation are currently outdated and continue to grow as each city grows. As that happens they become less efficient for all users.
Although they have not yet started building the new, more efficient system, one has to wonder what their California map is looking like right now. Making the utility lines more efficient is a hard task, and would take some extensive planning as to where each line would be placed, not just for the existing buildings, but also so that future growth can happen and not complicate the system unnecessarily. Not only will this mean drawing out where each line will go, but also consulting a road atlas to find out if there are roads in that area that will lead to where they will need to dig in order to put in the necessary equipment. To a certain degree that changes if they decide not to put all of the piping through the ground, as has been proposed might be able to improve the efficiency of distribution.
As extensive as all this sounds, it seems like it might be reasonable to say that if this goes well, it will undoubtedly attract national attention. If that happens it might not just be California that has to make up a map of their residential areas and where to do the construction on the grid. It is often surprising which are the first states to start adopting something, and for all you know there might next be a Montana or Florida map that has been customized so they can figure out how to put a new grid in there too.
